While exploring the wooded surroundings of Chiasso, a Swiss town on the southern border with Italy, one often encounters man-made structures. Walls and fences were built within the most remote areas of the forest to mark boundary lines between states. Sometimes natural elements of the landscape morphology function as the demarcation lines between countries. Such is
the case with the crack depicted in the print Forest Formula #1
by Nino Baumgartner, which he encountered while scouting the forest for his performance. Shortkuts are a series of participatory performances inviting the public to accompany the artist on a journey off the beaten path. The track will lead us to more hidden spaces. The print is a mimetic pattern build by extracting structural and colour information from his photograph. This edition was printed on the occasion of Abbreviazioni, the artist’s solo show at Spazio Lampo, Chiasso.

Nino Baumgartner was born in Bätterkinden in 1979. He currently
lives and works in Berne. His artistic practice encompasses a variety of media, including performances, videos, prints
and installations. He considers himself a kind of landscape painter, however without painting in the true sense of the word.
His explorations of landscape and space are based on physical interactions that mobilize the aesthetics and body language specific to extreme and endurance sports. Baumgartner is particularly interested
in the connection between nature and humans, and how our relationship with the environment influences our movement and mobility. Physical strength and the limits
of bodily possibilities are the two aspects through which Baumgartner engages with the environment.
Recent exhibitions include: Abbreviazioni (Spazio Lampo, Chiasso, 2023), We would prefer not to (Forum Schlossplatz, Aarau, 2023), Turner’s Turn (Swiss Artist Research Network – SARN – Andermatt, 2022)
